The UK public procurement landscape
UK public sector procurement is spread across a fragmented landscape of portals, registers, and buyer-specific systems. There is no single place where every tender is published, which is why suppliers who rely on one source consistently miss opportunities that would have suited them well.

Step 1: Know what you are looking for
Define your CPV codes (Common Procurement Vocabulary -- the standardised classification codes for all goods, services, and works), your geographic scope, your contract value range, and your preferred buyer types. CPV code filtering is more reliable than keyword search because buyers describe the same work in very different ways.
Step 2: Set up alerts on the main portals
Register on Find a Tender (find-tender.service.gov.uk) and Contracts Finder (gov.uk/contracts-finder) and set up saved searches by CPV code and keyword. Both are free. FTS only covers above-threshold notices; Contracts Finder covers England from £12,000. Neither matches you intelligently to opportunities.
Step 3: Check your devolved portal
If you service Scotland, register on Public Contracts Scotland (publiccontractsscotland.gov.uk). For Wales, use Sell2Wales (sell2wales.gov.wales). For Northern Ireland, use eTendersNI (etendersni.gov.uk). For the Republic of Ireland, use eTenders (etenders.gov.ie).
Step 4: Watch buyer portals directly
A significant proportion of UK procurement -- particularly below-threshold contracts -- is published only on the buyer's own procurement system. More than 35 NHS trusts use individual Atamis portals. More than 105 councils use In-Tend Host. ProContract, Delta eSourcing, and Jaggaer are used by hundreds more. Framework call-off portals for CCS, NEPO, ESPO, YPO, The Chest, and Procurement for Housing carry volumes not visible on central registers.

Common mistakes to avoid
Keyword-only searching misses tenders described in unexpected ways -- CPV codes are more reliable. Ignoring frameworks means missing a significant proportion of the market in many sectors. Missing devolved portals means missing every Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish contract. Not filtering by value means wading through contracts too small or too large to be viable.
