Description
[Research] We are seeking to commission a study to assess the effectiveness of a range of probiotics on reducing or delaying Campylobacter colonisation in the gut of broiler flocks. The proposed project will include an initial review of the literature followed by a field trial within broiler farms to assess whether commercially available probiotic formulations can reduce or delay Campylobacter colonisation in broiler flocks under commercial UK farming conditions and whether any reductions translate into lower contamination of poultry carcasses at processing. It will also assess potential co-benefits for producers, including impacts on bird welfare, flock health and production performance (incentives to encourage broiler farms to participate).
The researchers will deliver a research programme that includes product screening and selection, commercial farm recruitment and field trials, laboratory and biomarker analyses, and statistical modelling and reporting. The study will generate robust evidence on the effectiveness, practicality and scalability of probiotic interventions in real-world poultry production systems, helping to inform future policy strategies to reduce Campylobacter foodborne illness. If successful, administering probiotics to chicks (via feed and/or drinking water) could be a potential practical intervention for reducing Campylobacter levels found on chicken prior to slaughter, with a substantial impact on the burden of human disease.
