Description
The Dow Beck (Caldewgate) culvert runs in a west/east direction under the eastbound A595 carriageway. O.S. grid coordinates 339414.92E; 555983.64N.
In 2017 a Principal Inspection was undertaken at Dow Beck Caldewgate Culvert which identified a number of defects. However, during remodelling of the road layout in 1993 section of the culvert collapsed and approximately 80m of concrete protection was provided above the culvert. The collapsed culvert was replaced.
Cumberland Council has taken the decision to progress a saddling of profile B & C for Dow Beck (Caldewgate) Bridge. The saddling shall ensure the structure is suitable for C&U 40 loading, without weight restrictions applying.
The project is to be let as Design and Build contract with the contractor being responsible for completion of a full design and obtaining all necessary consents, permits and orders to allow construction works to commence on 3rd August 2026.
