What happened
London Borough of Hackney awarded this contract to Aquamaintain Ltd worth £67,950 on 13 Jul 2026. The contract runs until 9 Dec 2027.
Description
This project seeks to help restore the Old Lea, as far as possible, in both appearance and ecological function, transforming it into a cleaner, healthier, naturally flowing and more climate-resilient waterway. Rewilding interventions will mimic key natural processes typically driven by beaver activity, large herbivores, and woodland river dynamics, including tree fall, decay, and storm-driven channel change. These processes support habitat complexity, improve water quality, and strengthen ecological resilience.
Through participatory design and inclusive community engagement, the project will also enhance public wellbeing and enjoyment of the Old Lea by providing:
Access to a safer, welcoming and nature-rich environment.
Opportunities for nature-based education for children and skills training for all ages.
Regular engagement events, including dedicated women-only sessions.
Educational signage to support learning and awareness.
The required service is for highly experienced and knowledgeable contractors in delivering improvement works to the river banks and beds of the river, to support the restoration and rewilding of the River Lea.
